What do people look for when choosing Boarding Schools In The UK…

When searching for a UK boarding school in the UK it is suggested that most people look to choose a boarding school by rankings on internet statistic tables/leagues or how high up on an internet search engine they appear. But what are the real things UK boarding school rankings are based on? And how important are they when choosing a UK boarding school?

The majority of UK boarding school rankings are based on A-level or GCSE results and the number of students that go onto a highly ranked university after finishing boarding school.

What are the positives of school rankings?

Internet based rankings are good for anyone that doesn’t know much about a particular school/s or the UK and can only compare what they see on the internet.

What are the negatives of school rankings?

The majority of rankings only measure the results of examination grades and not how the school is achieving in other aspects that aren’t measured.

Is this a fair way of judging UK boarding schools?

Some people say this isn’t a fair way of judging good boarding schools as they are only placed in statistics tables and leagues based on the amount of A* and A grades achieved by students in exam results. This doesn’t mean to say that schools with lesser exam results are worse as these schools may be achieving in other ways such as under achieving students that are on predicted lower grades but exceeding those grades but not to a standard of A* and A grades.

Should you consider internet statistics and league tables for UK boarding schools?

That is the question. As previously mentioned most people will make a decision from search engine rankings and statistics tables. Do parents look into the needs of a child and place them in a UK boarding school to match their children’s needs academically and physically? Should parents not just choose a boarding school based on exam results and look passed the most popular internet search engine results to find a boarding school that suits their child? I guess every parent is different and will parent in different ways and there will always be a debate on what is the best way to choose a UK boarding school.
