Choosing The Right Football University

It is getting to that time of the year where Year 13 and Post 18 students are receiving their university offers for September, it is a massive step when you leave school and are potentially leaving home for the first time too.

In the UK we are fortunate to have some of the world's best universities and there are some fantastic pathways and opportunities available through these with going into full time work after graduating, going onto professional sports and having the opportunity of branching out working abroad. There are many excellent sporting universities in the UK that have a rich history of producing fine sportsmen and sports women who have gone onto compete at the highest levels i.e representing GB in the Olympics, winning world championships, play in the Football League.

At 18+ it is very competitive for young footballers as you are competing against professional club academy scholars for professional contracts, it important for players that if you miss out on a pro contract that you are in an environment where you can keep developing at a similar level to your peers as well as giving yourself the best opportunity to be seen and have regular exposure to lots of clubs.

For players interested in joining a top football college or one of the top football universities in the UK, we have been out to find the best options where players can keep developing at a very high level within the university football academies but also study towards an excellent degree which can serve as a great plan B in the future. These UK football universities mirror the professional club environment, alongside your degree players train 5 days a week, work with former professional players and some of the universities enter their 1st teams into professional leagues which adds that element of exposure playing against other professional clubs, playing regularly in front of scouts and coaches of different teams. As a result, one of the leading football colleges and football universities in the UK have seen two players in the past year or so go onto signing with EFL clubs here in the UK which is fantastic.

Many people look to the US at 18+ for scholarships for pathways but the only noticeable player to go through this route and make it here in the UK is Jack Harrison. There are some good football colleges out in the US but the cost is high, the level of coaching, facilities and exposure is limited compared to the UK where football is arguably our national sport. You have 92 professional clubs plus the national league teams and semi-pro leagues so there is lots of opportunity to develop and be seen if you are in the right environment.

The top football universities in the UK which we recommend here at UK Football Schools academically are very well known for their excellence too. Footballers at these UK football universities can study towards a variety of degree courses, Sports and Business based courses tend to be the most popular as footballers if they don't go onto play professional football these degree courses can allow them to work in the football and sporting industry in the future. There are however a variety of other degrees available from Law, Science and Engineering based courses, Architecture and design courses plus many different humanities-based degrees too.
