The big debate being thrown around lately is due to the state of the women's game and how it is slowly becoming as big as the men's game. The first ever women's football match was held in 1895 before the FA (Football Association) banned women from playing football in 1921. With almost a 50 year gap the Womens FA was formed with 44 members. Since this was formed the women's game has grown in strength and is getting bigger and bigger each year. In 1991 the Women's FA Premier League (FAWPL) was formed and 3 years later the FA launched it's biggest ever plans to develop the women's game from grassroots level to the elite level. In 2006, England Women qualified for the FIFA Women's World Cup after a 12 year absence. This day and age, women players are receiving MBE's for services to the game and women and girls football in England are racking up England cap's more than what some of the men are! One particular player holding the record for the most England caps across the women's and the men's game!
Is this because of the investment being put into grassroots football and English Football Academies for girls in the UK? From a young age, football academies in the UK are becoming more and more popular and UK Boarding Schools are also investing in football programmes for girls to start playing the game at such a young age. Universities are also excellent pathways for ladies football with a particular University having teams that have qualified for the Women's Champions League.
As always, we have searched for the best academies for girls football, best football programmes for girls and the best schools in england for girls football for those young aspiring ladies who one day can be seen playing in front of thousands of fans! Some of the good schools in England have fantastic girls football programmes.
If the investment and time was to continue into football academies and football programmes in the UK for young girls then surely this can only be a good thing for the Women's game and for the national team.
So the big question and the debate will probably go on for years to come, is the women's game one day going to be as big as the men's game?
